Women in the pharmaceutical industry. Khokhlenkova Nataliia, NPhU

Khokhlenkova Nataliia
Head of the Department of Biotechnology
of the National Pharmaceutical University
Doctor of pharmaceutical sciences, professor

– What was your professional career?

School education with a special focus on biology was the starting point to choose the profession. Our teacher inspired us so much that many of my classmates became medical students with an opportunity to develop their skills. I realized that I am probably not ready to be a doctor, so I chose a related specialty – pharmacy. And I never regret it. After graduating from the university, I worked at the State Scientific Center for Medicines. But in 2004, I decided to switch to teaching at the Department of Drug Technology of National Pharmaceutical University, where my career development ranged from an assistant to professor. In 2019 I got the position of the head of the Department of Biotechnology. This is a new field for me that requires constant learning and improvement. In general, I have been getting new knowledge all my life, although I already have students myself. I believe that this process is endless because the way to goals implementation makes life full and rich.

– What skills are needed to succeed in the pharmaceutical field?

Basic knowledge and willingness for self-improvement. Also, so-called soft skills, which help to present yourself, make creative decisions, and work in a team, are of great importance today.  As well as a love for people, and a desire to help those in need.

– Would you like to highlight one of the women from our field who inspired you?

I was lucky because there were and are many extraordinary personalities on my way. My first teacher in science was Valentina Mykolaivna Chushenko, who taught me to be critical of everything. Tatyana Hryhorivna Yarnikh is not only the scientific supervisor of my PhD and Doctoral theses but also the person who taught me to take professional decisions, to be responsible for them, and to think strategically. Kotvitska Alla Anatolyivna, our rector, is an inspiring role model. A combination of femininity, beauty, and at the same time strength and purposefulness is the portrait of Alla Anatolievna. Her ability to make non-standard decisions, a clear understanding of the path that needs to be followed, and incredible efficiency – are qualities that form a leader.

– Where can students get experience and knowledge in pharmaceuticals?

Of course, this classic pharmaceutical education provides knowledge that can be used anywhere. But it is important to engage in self-education, research new technologies and gain knowledge in your field.

– In your opinion, what can help in professional development?

Continuous self-development. Pharmacy is changing rapidly, so it is important to be "on the subject", and to be in contact with the international scientific community. Career success requires social interactions.

– What are your wishes for young specialists?

Don't be afraid! There will certainly be both – victories and defeats on your way. Get out of your comfort zone, and do something that scares you. Use every opportunity to prove yourself, and don't be afraid of responsibility. And study English! Also, don't forget about your personal life. Find time for hobbies, and look for an opportunity to realize yourself in creativity. Happy people are more likely to succeed in their careers!
